New artist in residence at National Civil War Centre on Appletongate, Newark ready to showcase talents

The latest artist in a town’s effort to improve access to art is ready to take up residency.

From July 23 to November 16, Elizabeth Lambert will be the new artist in residence at the National Civil War Centre, on Appletongate in Newark.

She will welcome members of the public to have a studio on the top floor of the centre, which is open for anyone to visit.

Elizabeth has many talents as a curator, producer, artist, and writer, and will also facilitate free events to inspire visitors to connect with the arts.

Her work will explore stories of Newark and Sherwood, both past and present, and will take inspiration from artefacts, collections, buildings and heritage sites across the district.

Elizabeth plans to use craft, design, technology and text, to make sensory and interactive experiences for people to engage with her work, and use creative writing and research to gather modern stories from the community that can be shared throughout the district and beyond.

She will be the third Artist in Residence in the programme, following on from paper cut artist Vanessa Stone, and digital artist Samantha Jayne.

The ongoing three-year Open Doors programme is organised by Newark and Sherwood District Council and funded by Arts Council England. Its aim is to increase creative opportunities for young people and under-served groups and become a focal point for culture across Newark and Sherwood.

Rowan Cozens, Newark and Sherwood District Council’s portfolio holder for heritage, culture, and the arts, said: “A new Artist in Residence at the National Civil War Centre is a positive step for heritage and culture in the district.

“Allowing people to engage with her work for several months means that people can be inspired by Elizabeth to make their own creations.”

Elizabeth is co-founder of the artist collective, Brew Projects and a founder member of Coreset studios, a thriving and supportive artist community based in Newark.
