The new chairman of Southwell Town Council is Mrs Pauline Jenkins.
She was elected at a meeting yesterday to replace Mr Andy Gregory.
Mr Gregory was nominated to stand again.
However, when Mrs Jenkins was also nominated, he said he had had his year and would not stand in the way of someone who wanted the role.
Mr Gregory, an independent councillor, was praised by the Liberal Democrats and Consevatives.
He said it had been a busy and successful year.
Mrs Jenkins was the beaten Liberal Democrat candidate in Newark in the recent General Election.
Mr Roger Dobson was voted vice-chairman.
Mr Peter Harris (Lib Dem) was re-elected leader, despite Conservatives arguing that the role was not necessary and politicised the council.
