Newark College launch new media suite and radio studio for students in partnership with Radio Newark

A college has officially launched its new media suite, further supporting the education of young people in Newark by expanding the resources available to them.

Newark College students will now have access to state of the art media equipment as part of their studies, including a fully equipped radio and recording studio.

The college has also formed a partnership with Radio Newark, who provided much of the equipment, allowing them to present live radio shows from the space twice a week.

The new facilities were officially opened by former student Josh Rai, who has since gone on to build a successful career in media production, and is the founder of Selfless Films which produces documentaries and pitches to major broadcasters.

Josh praised the new suite as he spoke with students about his journey from studying for a B-Tech in media communications at Newark College 25 years ago, to working his way up in in the industry.

“I feel very humbled to have been called back to share my journey,” he said.

“I remember when we were based on Kirkgate, where the Violin School still is, and things have changed so much.

“These fantastic facilities are hugely positive and give students the freedom to experiment in a variety of mediums.

“There is also a bespoke curriculum which has been developed and led by students.

“One thing that hasn’t change is the considerable amount of support available from the amazing tutors.”

Media pathway tutor, Mike Bonner-MacKenzie, said: “Last year all we had was a small cupboard with a microphone and some old gear — we did our best.

“We had such a small budget, so we have to make use of every penny.

“When we had an opportunity to move into a much bigger space and work alongside Radio Newark, we were really excited to make everything much more professional.

“All the students have been very impressed by it all and hopefully it only continues to grow and grow.”
