Newark and Sherwood District Council approves plans to convert house on Northgate, Newark, into flats

Redevelopment project aiming to breath new life into an old house has been approved.

Newark and Sherwood District Council planning committee backed plans to convert the building at 94 Northgate, Newark.

The development would see the existing residential building converted into five flats.

Also included in the plans are the remodelling of an outbuilding, installation of lighting and the construction of a new secured bin storage area.

Plans for the property, next to Halfords, also included a communal garden area and room for seven parking spaces.

The application was brought before the planning committee because it was submitted by the district council itself.

Very few changes to the property are required, however there are proposals for a partial demolition to an exterior wall in order to widen an existing gateway to allow for better access.

Trees had previously been removed from the site, although, following a recent Newark and Sherwood District Council cabinet meeting, conservation area boundaries have changed and will now include the property, therefore all future works will be subject to conservation area rules.

A report to the meeting said there was a need for affordable one-bedroom flats in Newark, adding the application would "contribute to meeting an identified need."

It continued: "The proposed re-use would help conserve the building for future generations. It would make efficient use of an existing building while adding to the much-needed affordable housing stock in a form that would align with local affordable housing need."

The project was unanimously approved by the planning committee.
