Owner of GA Kitchen in Oakham reopens GA Bubble Tea at Paxtons Court, Newark as GA Sushi

A business with a new offer has brought foodies from across the county into the heart of town.

KC Lee, the owner of GA Bubble Tea at Paxtons Court, Newark, decided to give a twist to his bubble tea and poke bowl business and turn it into a sushi house.

He first started a sushi business three years ago — GA Kitchen — in Oakham, and recently expanded it to Newark.

GA Bubble Tea first opened its doors in the town centre in February last year, however, in August, it re-opened as GA Sushi.

Months into the business, the owner has admitted his satisfaction with seeing people travel all the way from Nottingham and Lincoln only for his restaurant.

He said: “A lot of local people who live in Newark, when they first came they always thanked us as there are no sushi restaurants in Newark, which was quite surprising.

“Over the last three months, we've got more locals who are referred by their friends or family who are brave enough to try us once.

“When they realise the quality, then they tell their friends and I would say that most recently, about 90% of our customers are from Nottingham.”

The bubble tea business was quite popular, especially during the warmer months, so the owner made sure to continue the bubble tea business alongside the sushi so he has different offers to all tastes.

The menu offers a range of sushi, from set sushi sets, sashimi bowls, uramaki and nigiri to gunkan, sashimi, temaki, ramen and udon, donburi and gyoza.

Mr Lee added: “When you do sushi, we have a lot of different ingredients and all of our things are from Japan, even our ramen noodles are from Japan.

“It's totally different from those that you buy from the supermarket, we can't just buy one from the supplier and use it straight away.

“Those details make the difference, even though it's a small portion of sushi, like a piece of fish on rice.”

The business is open Monday to Friday from 12noon until 4.30pm and Saturday from 12noon to 3pm and from 5pm to 9pm.

“For us to run a little restaurant here, our main selling is lunchtime and we give another opportunity for the locals who work around town to have a place for lunch with better taste.

“Now that we have moved to Newark, Newark is more activity, even though locals say it is getting worse, but from my point of view, at least I can see the council is trying to do something to bring it back.”
