A primary school has received a new poly tunnel to replace one damaged by Storm Doris.

Pupils at Holy Trinity Catholic Academy, Newark, can now use the larger tunnel - which measures 15ft by 10ft - and the school hopes to grow more produce as a result.

Its previous structure was damaged by the storm, in February last year.

It was donated by BNM Alliance, which is carrying out major improvements to the sewer and water network in the town on behalf of Severn Trent. They laid new sewer pipes on Boundary Road and also across access to the school’s car park.

Mrs Christine Smith, a teaching assistant at Holy Trinity, said: “Hopefully this new larger tunnel will mean that we can get more children out there growing things.

“There is more room for the pupils in there now.”

The school’s gardening club meets every week and will use the poly tunnel, and Mrs Smith added that she expected other pupils to use it too.

A spokesman for BNM Alliance said: “When we learned that the school green house had been irrevocably damaged during Storm Doris we saw an opportunity to say thank you for their patience by providing a bigger, better structure.”
