Barnby Road Academy's teaching assistant given thumbs up by Newark Patriotic Fund after placing new memorial in Newark schools grounds




Veterans have praised youngsters for their special treatment during a poignant Remembrance event.

Mrs Venetia Pepper, a teaching assistant at Barnby Road Academy and her husband, Ian, created a memorial garden in the primary school grounds.

On Friday, year six pupils invited members of Newark Patriotic Fund to see it.

The 25 veterans who went along were entertained by the school choir, who sang for their guests, before inviting them in to share cake with them.

After, the cakes were sold to parents in aid of the Newark Poppy Appeal, and £191 was raised altogether.

Mac Mallard, trustee of the Newark Patriotic Fund, was full of praise for the youngsters who looked after them during the event.

He said: “It was a fantastic thing they did for us. The children were all so polite and treated us like royalty.

“They were a credit to the school.”
