A burglar who broke into a victim's home while he and his family were in the property has sent to prison for 18 months.

Shaun Kennelley, 20, of Cross Street, Newark, was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court yesterday after pleading guilty to burglary, two counts of theft and one of driving while disqualified.

The court was told he had broken into a home in Brownlow Close, East Stoke, on July 12 while the family were inside.

The keys to a Jaguar and a BMW were taken during the burglary, resulting in the vehicles being stolen. Cash and electrical items were also taken.

When the victim noticed his vehicles had been stolen he activated his tracker for the Jaguar which was found in Derbyshire. The stolen BMW was found nearby.

Both cars were recovered by Derbyshire police.

Officers identified Kennelly from CCTV at the scene of the burglary.

Speaking after the sentence Detective Constable Rebecca Butler said: "Kennelley broke into his victim's home while he and his family were in the house and then drove off with their personal possessions.

"His behaviour caused them considerable distress and I'm pleased Kennelley has now been removed from the streets of Nottinghamshire."

The police have made tackling burglary a priority with two new dedicated teams focusing their efforts on tackling and reducing burglary in the city and county.
