Newark family count blessings after house fire in the night
A mum who woke up to the smell of smoke said her family were lucky to escape safely after their kitchen set alight in the night.
Abbey-Katie Miller, 21, of Newark, woke up on Saturday morning struggling to breathe because of the smoke coming from downstairs.
In what is a suspected arson attack on her Esther Varney Place home, she said counted her family’s blessings after her one-year-old son Reggie, 21-year-old partner Callum Shalloe, and pet dog Hugo all escaped unharmed.
“It was about 5.30am and I was woken by the smell of smoke — I couldn’t breath,” she said.
“An arson attack on our garden furniture caught light at the kitchen window. It has left the house an absolute state. It isn’t liveable at all.”
The family will meet with their housing providers today to discuss what follows.
They will have to be relocated until the house is safe to return to.
With thousands of pounds of damage, Abbey-Katie’s sister, Hannah-Louise Quayle, set up an Amazon wish-list and a GoFundMe page.
More than £300-worth of items have already been bought from the wish-list, while the GoFundMe has raised more than £200.
Contact the police on 101, quoting incident 134 of July 4, if you have information about the fire.
