Newark branch of Labour Party has launched plans for a new Green Deal for the town

The Newark branch of the Labour Party has launched proposals for a Green New Deal for the town.

The initiative was launched after a debate at the national Labour Party conference.

It aims to encourage people and community groups to work together to make local changes.

James Baggaley, a Labour town councillor, said: "This is the start of a process we can all be involved in.

“As councillors we want to do all we can to support the transformation of our economy away from fossil fuels to a clean and affordable future.

“I will be holding meetings in my own ward of Castle and urge people to get in touch if they wish to attend or would like to find out more information about the green new deal.

“A Green New Deal will transform the economy through unprecedented investment in technology, infrastructure and people. We can create good jobs in towns like Newark.”

Mr Baggaley said the new deal could also help address regional inequalities.

He said: “It is why we as Labour councillors are supporting the policy of a Green New Deal. We recognise that we need a government in Westminster to make change but, also, we need to see change locally.

“For a town like Newark, a Green New Deal means we could invest in our infrastructure, support our people and protect, and improve our green space.”

The Newark Labour Party is focused on three main areas:

Infrastructure — aiming to be more ambitious when building new social housing, taking lessons from successful projects in Nottingham and Norwich where affordability was matched with sustainability and great design.

Skills — providing the skills and training to help drive the green economy.

Mr Baggaley said: “Britain was once the workshop of the world. We led in so many industries but if we are to thrive in this century, we must do more to support the skills needed.

"We must invest in our local colleges and training centres, not just at university level but also lifelong learning.”

Green Space — recognising the vital role green spaces and playing fields play in health and wellbeing.

“In recent years we have seen our playing fields come under attack from development,” said Mr Baggaley.

“Often these playing fields are in areas of our town already underprovided for. It’s why our councillors have voted against the proposal to build on Lincoln Road playing fields and called for a renewed green space strategy.”

The Newark Labour Party plans to publish more about its Green New Deal in the coming weeks.
