Newark man breached restraining order by attacking woman at address off Winthorpe Road
A domestic abuse survivor was spat at, grabbed by her hair and punched in the face by a Newark man.
Arturas Abramovas, 35, attacked her at an address off Winthorpe Road in Newark on July 23, 2021.
When the woman tried to call police Abramovas smacked her in the face, snatched her phone out of her hands and threw it to the ground, smashing the screen.
Abramovas, who had ignored a restraining order when he carried out the attack, eventually left. The woman’s friends convinced her to call the police.
She suffered bruising to her face and head and some of her hair had been pulled from her scalp.
Abramovas, of Boundary Road, went on to plead guilty to charges of assault causing actual bodily harm, criminal damage and harassment, and admitted to breaching a restraining order.
He was locked up for two years when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing on Tuesday.
Detective Sergeant Vanessa Wightman, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "This was a distressing incident for this survivor who showed immense courage in coming forward following this awful violence towards her.
“The force treats domestic abuse extremely seriously and will respond swiftly and robustly to reports made to us.
"I would urge anyone who has been affected by domestic abuse to contact us, either directly or indirectly, so that we can protect them.
“I hope this case sends a clear message to our communities that we will never tolerate domestic abuse and we will do all we can to work with survivors and bring perpetrators to justice.
"I want to re-assure anyone who is suffering domestic abuse that Nottinghamshire Police continues to work closely with partner agencies and we are here to help and support them.
"If you are in danger, please call 999 and we will come to your aid."
Police work with partners to tackle this issue including raising awareness of confidential support services that remain available to those experiencing domestic abuse.
This work has included raising awareness of the Silent Solution police system, which people can use to report an emergency when it's not safe for them to speak, and supporting the #YouAreNotAlone campaign.
