Episode one of Nathan Foad's Newark, Newark premiered on GoldTV mush and it's very Newark

Well fellow Newarkers, we've achieved fame, or infamy, take your pick, on the national stage mush.

Live in Newark, you'll recognise mush to be mate and some of the other colloquialisms such as owt or chawed for pinched or stolen.

Maybe we'll get our own urban dictionary out of Newark, Newark!

You may also have recognised just about all of the town's key landmarks such as the market place, the street, Wood Street, with the differently-coloured front doors, and erm B&M and Yorke Drive.

TKMaxx had a mention and pub-wise, so has The Rupert.

Overwhelmingly, episode one of three, seems to have been a hit.

The relationship between chip shop manager Max and her son Lesley, who has just come out to no-one's surprise on his mum's 40th is a believable and endearing one, perhaps because it is strongly based upon creator Nathan Foad's relationship growing up in Newark.

There have been strong, funny and compelling performances and a cracking initial plot making for a good opening episode with two episodes still to play out over the next two consecutive evenings.

There are some good gags too, such as, spoiler alert, Maxine (Morgana Robinson) to her mother Pauline (Beverley Callard) regarding her ex Terry (Mathew Horne) that goes along the line of: "He's got a job and his own teeth, what more do you want?" To which Max replies: "Someone who takes less than eight years to put a shed up."

The sitcom is written by Foad who grew up in the town and was eager to return to Newark for the semi-autobiographical show.

Newark, Newark is set in the market town and follows pugnacious chip shop manager and exhausted matriarch Maxine as she tries to ride out her divorce and find someone who actually lights her fire.

However, it's easier said than done with her big-mouthed, soft-bellied, son, Leslie (Jai Hollis) loosely based on Foad himself, and her dullard ex-husband, trying ever more desperately to win her back.
