The letter from Francis Towndrow (Return Green Space, News Views, December 2) fails to mention that Newark and Sherwood District Council’s approach to purchase the Elm Avenue Stadium land from the county council had the support of Newark Sports Association (NSA).

NSA wanted the site to be developed, with the capital sum generated being used to help fund their relatively limited plans to develop a sports hub on the nearby RHP sports ground.

Newark Sports Association, however, failed to gain the confidence or financial support of Sports England or any of the major sports governing bodies for their sports hub proposals and the district council was forced to conclude its business plan was unsustainable.
