Newark students are set to compete in the final of a national LEGO robotics challenge, writes Ella Mather.

Pupils at Newark Academy’s STEM club recently took part in the Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge 2022 and completely exceeded their expectations.

The innovative pupils will compete in the final of the challenge at the NEC Big Bang Fair in Birmingham in June.

This was only the second year the STEM club took part in the LEGO challenge and, with a two-year hiatus from enrichment at Newark Academy, the students set themselves the personal challenge of giving it their best go — attempting what they could and having some fun with the robots.

The club exceeded this challenge and did themselves and the academy proud as they competed at the regional competition on Thursday, May 12, at Sheffield University with ten other schools.

They demonstrated resilience and excellent teamwork, securing their place as finalists at the NEC Big Bang Fair next month.

The team of students, from key stage three, had been working hard since November to build and programme two LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robots to carry out the following tasks:

The Speed Challenge — testing their robot to travel over 4m as fast as possible.

The Challenge Mat — to programme their robot to solve as many tasks on the challenge mat in five minutes.

Presentation — a three to five-minute presentation about an engineering solution to a humanitarian aid problem.

Discussion — prepared pointers to discuss the parts, programming and challenges they have faced while taking part in the tasks.

The team will take part in the final on Thursday, June 23.

Newark Academy hopes the team’s aspirations to pursue a career in STEM will be further fuelled by attending the final event, and possibly returning victorious.
