Mass covid testing centre at Newark Fitness and Sports Centre to be replaced by mobile test site

A covid testing centre in Newark will be replaced by a mobile test site.

The town’s rapid mass testing centre at Newark Fitness and Sports Centre, off Lord Hawk Way, will close at the end of the month.

It will be replaced by a new mobile site which will come to Newark between 10am and 4.30pm every Wednesday and Saturday.

The changes are part of plans to make regular covid-19 testing part of residents’ weekly routine, and to allow the sports and fitness centre to re-open fully in May.

The location of the new mobile site it yet to be confirmed, but Newark and Sherwood District Council said it was looking at different spots in the town centre.

David Lloyd, leader of the council, said anyone could get a supervised test at the mobile site, and resident would also be able collect a home test kit as well.

“The mobile test site option has proved really effective in Ollerton and has now been introduced to Southwell every Monday and Thursday,” said Mr Lloyd.

“It makes sense to replicate this cost-effective solution in Newark now that the Sports and Fitness centre is preparing to re-open.

“The mobile solution is particularly suited to Newark and will give our residents a convenient way to either get a supervised test or to collect their kits for home testing.”

Regular twice weekly testing is a cornerstone of the government roadmap out of lockdown.

Jonathan Gribbin, director of Public Health for Nottinghamshire, said it was important that residents continued to take advantage of twice, weekly testing.

“Twice weekly testing is really important,” he said.

“When you have no symptoms, it’s an additional thing we can do to keep ourselves, our families and communities safer.

“There are now more than 100 different places to pick up free home testing kits across Nottinghamshire including pharmacies and testing sites.”

Anyone over 18 can collect or order home testing kits.
