Sherwood Forest Hospitals surveyed 288 patients who were pleased with their Newark Hospital experience

Patients that use Newark Hospital's Urgent Care Centre (UCC) have overall been pleased with their experiences, new research has revealed.

NHS patients across the country's 132 NHS acute trusts were surveyed about their experiences of urgent and emergency care, and scored trusts out of ten across a range of areas.

The review from Sherwood Forest Hospitals' Emergency Department surveyed 288 patients, which scored Newark Hospital's UCC and King’s Mill Hospital's Emergency Department.

Patients who attended Newark Hospital’s UCC scored the centre 8.8 out of 10 for overall experience, gave the service 9.5 out of 10 for respect and dignity, and healthcare professionals 9.1 out of 10.

The survey at King’s Mill Hospital's Emergency Department reported patients were some of the most respected in the region and received some of the best care and treatment, according to the latest Care Quality Commission patient survey.

Sherwood Forest Hospitals scored well for the way doctors and nurses treated patients in its emergency department (8.5 out of 10), the care and treatment they received (8.4 out of 10), the environment and facilities (8.6 out of 10) and the respect and dignity patients received (9.2 out of 10).

Newark's UCC was scored separately as it is classed as a Type 3 service (urgent care centres, urgent treatment centres and minor injuries units) and was one of 63 trusts surveyed across the country, with 137 patients responding to the survey.

It also scored better than most trusts for its help in controlling patients’ pain and making sure patients did not feel threatened by others and visitors.

Divisional general manager for urgent and emergency care at the trust, Siobhan Favier, said: “We are really pleased with the results which indicate that our patients are getting good care.

"We would like to thank our staff for their continued high standards of care and compassion during what has been and continues to be a very busy time.

“We know that there is still work to do to improve things like waiting times and making sure we are taking into account our patients’ home situation before they are discharged from ED and we continue to work hard with our healthcare partners to improve these.

"However, it is really pleasing to see that we have scored so well on patients overall experience and respect and dignity.”

Paul Baggaley, secretary of the Say Yes To Newark Hospital campaign group, said: “This is all good news, but the urgent care centre can do so much more, it's underutilised at the moment.

"There are still stories of Newark patients being taken to other hospitals, in ambulances with conditions that could easily be treated at Newark.

"This is a massive waste of resources and it diverts the emergency services away from critical care, and occupies doctors and nurses in busy A&Es.

"The proposal to bring orthopaedic operations back to Newark Hospital will mean improved out of hours cover, which in turn should mean that more patients are treated locally. This can only be a good thing.”
