Newark Southern Link Road next phase of work set to start between Hawton Road and A46, by Brehenny Engineering

The Newark Southern Link Road will take another step closer to completion as the next phase of work is due to start next month.

Once fully complete the £100m link road project will connect the A1 to the A46 south of Newark via a 5km stretch of single carriageway road and serve new housing being built as part of the Middlebeck development.

The road is being build in stages, with the first section opened to traffic last October, from a newly built roundabout at Fernwood, opposite the Welcome Break services, to the Bowbridge Lane roundabout, near Gannet’s Cafe.

The next phase, led by Brehenny Engineering, will link the current stretch of road to the A46, including a roundabout south of the Lord Ted roundabout, near Farndon, and will also link to Hawton Road.

Work is set to start on February 23, with signage being put in place ahead of time to alert road users and residents.

Initial work will see a 700-metre-long stretch of the A46 reduced to single lane traffic, with 40mph speed limits to ensure safety.

The middle section, linking Bowbridge Lane to Hawton Road, is currently under construction and completion is not expected before spring.

Once fully complete, the new link road will have a 40mph speed limit, include footpaths and cycle lanes, as well as large ponds to act as surface water drainage and promote biodiversity in the area.

The road has also received a proper name and upon completion will be called Middlebeck Way, as it will run along the southern edge of the 3,000 house Middlebeck development.

Developers state the £100m road development project will “ensure a smoother, more even flow of traffic around the town as a whole” and ease pressure on busy roads in and out of Newark.

It is also argued that by improving transport links and connectivity, the region’s economy will be strengthened, and that Newark’s attraction as a place to live, work and visit, will be improved, benefitting services, businesses, and tourism.

The project is scheduled for completion in September 2026.
