Two games at Kelham Road see close rugby contests with Newark seconds defeating Gainsborough and the thirds narrowly losing to Southwell Bandits

Two games of rugby were played at Kelham Road at the weekend, with Newark's 2nds and 3rds in action.

Freezing conditions did not help as all four teams struggled on the fields but they fought on.

On the main pitch, the 2nds took on Gainsborough and Newark came out nine-point winners as they ended the contest with a 24-15 lead.

It wasn't all plain sailing for the Newark side with Gainsborough boasting a powerful side that regurly asked questions of theirteam's defence.

Newark were also playing loose at times which cost them valuable points as the penalties started to rack up.

Still, Newark were able to use their teamwork and speed effectively.

Their scrum was also up to the task and the home team were 14 points ahead with the end in sight.

To Gainsborough's credit, they did not give in and continued to press.

Their efforts paid off when they closed the spread thanks to a try that saw them attack the Newark line and find the gap.

A good crowd cheered on the Newark number two side and the team produced a much-needed win.

The victory saw them move five points clear of the relegation zone.

Pacy Newark winger Scott Hickton crossed twice for the home side with Sean Denning scoring one try and another being added as a penalty try.

Newark welcomed Southwell to a difficult environment as both teams managed to hold each other to a low score.

On the back pitch, the two third teams of their respective clubs fought a close and tough game in freezing conditions.

In the end, it was the Southwell Bandits who secured the bragging rights as they came out 15-12 winners over the hosts thanks to a last-minute try.

"Although it's never nice to lose to the Redmen, it's a credit to both clubs that we can field three teams regularly," said a spokesman from Newark Rugby Club.

“In fact we had no fewer than 26 players who wanted a game on the day.

“It might be time for the club to consider a plan to bring back the mighty fourths.”

"It was a well-fought game against our nearest rivals," said Malc Hazard, The Bandits captain.

"It is always a tough contest against them and fairly even over the last two seasons in the 3rds.

"We enjoyed the game, played in the true spirit of rugby and it could have gone either way.

“Well done all.

“We look forward to the next meeting against Newark Rugby Club."
