Newark and Sherwood District Council have submitted plans to carry out a series of improvements to National Civil War Centre on Appletongate, Newark, which were discussed by Newark Town Council’s planning committee
Improvement works at a town centre tourist attraction have received no objection, despite a concern about security shutters.
Newark and Sherwood District Council have submitted plans to carry out a series of improvements and upgrades at the National Civil War Centre on Appletongate, Newark.
The proposals include replacing eight doors with bespoke fire doors to match the design of the existing ones, and the installation of roller or concertina-style sliding security shutters at two existing door openings.
Additional internal and external CCTV cameras will be added, with new external security lighting.
Repairs will be made to the building’s main entrance and stone canopy to the former Magnus School which has eroded.
The proposals seek to carefully cut out and replace sections of the existing stone with new Lincolnshire limestone to match existing size and profiles.
Internal alterations would also be required to improve the means of escape from the attic conservation into the Palace Theatre. A condemned vertical ladder would be replaced with a wooden staircase, and existing handrail extended.
Newark Town Council’s planning committee offered no objections.
However, councillors did express a concern about the appearance of the security shutter as they had previously objected to similar applications in the town centre on the same grounds.
To remain consistent with previous planning decisions regarding security shutters, it was suggested that support for the application would be subject to approval by a conservation officer.
