Newark FC to host Nottingham Forest as part of 150-year anniversary tribute

By Connor Thompson

A team consisting of Newark’s finest footballing talent will host Nottingham Forest.

The match is a tribute to 150 years of Newark football and will commemorate the first official football match in the town — a 0-0 draw between Newark FC and Nottingham Forest in 1869.

The team will be selected and managed by Damo Parkinson, manager of Newark Town, and Craig Roche, joint-manager of Newark Flowserve.

Eight players both Flowserve and Town will make up the 16-man squad.

As Newark FC did 150 years ago, the team will play in white shirts, black shorts and black socks.

Flowserve’s Lowfields ground on Hawton Lane, Newark, is the confirmed venue.

Gary Clarke, chairman of Newark Flowserve, said it would be great opportunity for players of both teams to play against the team they support, and a brilliant chance for spectators to see a Newark team take on Forest.

“It’s a great community project,” said Clarke. “We hope this inspires people to go out and watch more football.

“With every father watching from the stands there’s a son running around playing football.

“It’s a real community project and hopefully it encourages more people to support local football, whether its at Flowserve, in Collingham, or in Southwell.”

Damo Parkinson, manager of Newark Town, also said the game would be a great way to promote local football.

“It’s a fantastic event for the town,” said Parkinson. “We have just had nearly 200 down at the weekend (against Collingham) and Flowserve have had over 600 at home (against Selston) so hopefully there will be a big turn out.

“There’s a lot of decent footballers in Newark and it’s a great chance to showcase that.”

Parkinson formerly worked with Roche at Flowserve and said he was looking forward to selecting the side with the step-six manager.

“It won’t be as simple as choosing eight from each side,” he said.

“There will be a plan behind it and hopefully we come away with a solid side.”

Names are yet to be announced from either side, however, Forest have confirmed their squad will be made up of academy, under-21 and under-23 players.

The match will be played on Wednesday, May 1. Kick-off time is yet to be confirmed.
