Objections upheld over 117-home development for land at Highfields School off London Road, Balderton

Objections made for a previous application have been upheld for plans for a 117-home development.

Newark Town Council’s planning committee objected to the application by Avant Homes for land at Highfields School off London Road.

It would involve felling a number of trees, including five individual trees and three groups of trees with tree preservation orders.

The site has seen applications in the past, including one for 95 homes, which was dismissed on appeal in 2019 due to the loss of of trees.

Town planning committee members agreed to sustain the objections made to an application in 2018.

Particular note was made to the loss of green space and loss of high-value trees that would take place if the plans were approved.

Members also said traffic in the area would increase dramatically.

Committee member Johno Lee said: “For me, the tree preservation orders are a second — the traffic is a main priority.”

A lack of provision for affordable housing was another concern, with only 35 of the 117 properties in the most recent application.

The council also said the development was over intensive and would increase noise levels.

More than 50 comments have been lodged by residents, many objecting to the proposals.

Committee member Lisa Geary said: “I know that there’s a lot of people who have objected to this for a long time.

“There have been a number of developments down that road, so it’s even more important that we object to this.

“It’s unbelievable that the developers have come back wanting to add more houses and chop down more trees.”

The plans will be decided by Newark and Sherwood District Council.
