On a mission

Not only has the calendar a helpful list of useful liturgical dates, but each month provides a focus for many aspects of church work.

Under the supervision of Southwell’s Dean, the Very Rev John Guille, Southwell Minster had a facelift with the establishment of a website now attracting 100 hits daily.

The layout and presentation of the glossy pages in the calendar are top class with an exemplary use of pictures. Full marks to whoever created the design.

Relevant statistics underscore the church’s challenges. Serving a million people in 847 square miles, the diocese has 566 licensed ministers with 312 churches and 70 church schools.

More than 2,000 children under five are baptised each year, providing a great opportunity to reach and serve local families.

‘Children and church go together’ was the theme at the Newark and Notts show in May when the church had an innovative stand.

The new diocesan bishop, the Right Rev Paul Butler, should be pleased with the calendar that sets out his church’s challenges: Discerning God, valuing people, serving communities and enabling change.

Alas, only 18,600 adults of the million population are listed as members, but with this latest approach to missioning, linked to other publications begun this year, that number will surely grow.
