Newark and Sherwood District Council and Newark Palace Theatre to host outdoor theatre shows at Newark Castle this summer





This summer, the grounds of Newark Castle are set to transform into a stage for another season of spectacular outdoor theatre.

Newark Palace Theatre will be be hosting Palace at the Castle, with five shows lined up from July through August and offering something for everyone.

The season will kick off with the comedy The Bench on Monday July 22. With it’s witty script and setting, the mundane turns into the extraordinary as life stories unfold with humour and heart, and is being called a must-see show this summer.

No season of outdoor theatre would be complete without Shakespeare, so on Saturday, July 27, the magic and romance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream will fill the castle grounds in a fun, interactive, and highly accessible show, filled with laugh-out-loud moements.

On Tuesday, July 30, the Chapterhouse Theatre Company will bring to life Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, based on the the classic story of the March sisters through the adventures of their youth to the trials of young adulthood.

It is an uplifting and heartfelt tale featuring authentic costumes and a beautiful musical score.

There will be even more comedy on Thursday, August 8 with Wilde About Oscar, a one-man show by award-winning actor Jonathan Goodwin in which stories are told, laughter will be raised and perhaps, a few tears will be shed.

Finally, on Wednesday, August 14, The Gondoliers will transport you to the romantic canals of Venice in this light-hearted operetta, which promises a world of blissful romance, sharp satire, and comedic chaos.

“The dramatic backdrop of Newark Castle provides a unique ambiance that makes every show a truly magical experience and there really is a show for everyone.

“With lots of great places to eat in the town, visitors can even plan a day or evening-out, supporting our wonderful local businesses while enjoying the arts in a distinctive and historic setting too.

“If you have a child at secondary school, what a great opportunity to let them see some of the classic’s come to life in Newark Castle.

“I am immensely proud that these fantastic shows are coming to Newark, and I look forward to seeing many of you there this summer."

Adult tickets for shows start from £12, with concessionary, children, and group prices available.
