Parking scheme launched
A discount parking scheme designed to encourage people to shop in Newark was launched on Saturday.
The scheme, linked to the town’s association with the English Civil War, received a positive reaction from visitors to the town.
Six members of the English Civil War Society dressed as musketeers, a pikeman, a lord and lord’s ladies were at Tolney Lane carpark to help launch Newark’s Siege Coin Discount Parking Scheme.
The idea is based on an interpretation of Newark’s siege coin, which were produced in the Civil War when the town, a Royalist stronghold, was besieged and had to produce its own money to pay for goods and services.
The coins were introduced in the third siege of Newark, between October 1645 and May 1646.
