Reader’s letter: Paying price for past government

So, one of Boris Johnson's right hand ladies has been eliminated from the Tory leadership contest and, as I predicted, Robert Jenrick has topped the poll.

It seems to me as though poor Priti has become the latest scapegoat for the former government's asylum and crime crisis, even though most of the damage was inflicted by Suella Braverman.

Given that most of Priti's support is now likely to switch to Robert Jenrick, might the Newark MP have played his trump card already by getting out of government before the final nails in the Tory coffin were hammered in?

Given Jenrick's right wing views on the European Court of Human Rights and Israel, the party membership must be falling in love with him already.

Which can only be good news for Sir Keir Starmer and his changed Labour Party's policy of fixing the foundations of our country over the next decade and the Liberal Democrat’s chances of another breakthrough in what was once Tory heartlands. — GEOFFREY BROOKING, via email.
