Pensioners of Sutton-on-Trent feel discriminated by Club Care Insurance after motorcaravan insurance isn’t renewed

Pensioners who have been regulars at an insurance company for nearly 30 years have said that they feel "discriminated against" as their motorcaravan insurance hasn’t been renewed due to their age.

David and Pat King, aged 82 and 81 respectively of Sutton-on-Trent, have been insuring their car and motorcaravan with Camping and Caravanning Club’s insurance provider Club Care Insurance since 1995.

The motorcaravan’s insurance is renewed every year and is due on March 6, however, this year they didn’t receive the usual call a month before asking if they wish to renew.

The couple bought a van in 2004 and worked on it themselves to turn it into a motorcaravan, which had to be checked by an engineer and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

Under the insurance company’s criteria, they insure campervans, motorhomes, cars, and homes.

Mr and Mrs King’s motorcaravan fits within the description of a motorhome, as it doesn’t have a pop-up roof like campervans.

They have saved all the documents referring to the motorcaravan, from the moment they got it in 2004, to the transformation into a ‘home’, all the bills and travel.

Campervans insurance is covered from the age of 21 until 75, however, on the motorhome insurance criteria it doesn’t mention any age cover.

Mr King contacted the company and they told him they couldn’t insure them because they are over the age of 80 and it is their company’s policy.

He said: “What most people of our age would do is go somewhere else, which we did do, but because of the way we have been treated when we have been with them from 1995 continually every year, it is unbelievable.

“At the end of the day, we know we are right, we've gone through the right procedure and now the Financial Ombudsman says, we've got a case.”

The couple feels like the information provided by the company regarding their insurance criteria doesn’t apply to their vehicle and that they are being treated wrongly.

In their letter to the Financial Ombudsman, the couple said to be filing a complaint against Camping and Caravanning Club Insurance, as they feel discriminated against.

Despite having tried to talk to customer service, the situation didn’t go ahead and they had to insure their vehicle with Adrian Flux Insurance.

Pat added: “I feel completely let down, why didn’t they inform us before?

“Not only that but why have they suddenly come up with this criteria business because we’re just beginning in our 80s?

“There are loads of people like us that got these motorcaravans.”

Club Care Insurance, who have been approached for comment, said: “Our next steps will be to reach out to our customer directly to attempt to resolve this matter with them.”
