Application submitted for signage and plant equipment at a proposed Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd at former Homebase site on Northgate Retail Park, Newark

Plans for signage and plant equipment at a proposed supermarket development have been submitted.

Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd has lodged multiple further applications for the former Homebase site, on Northgate Retail Park, Newark.

It follows the major supermarket chain’s purchase of the site in 2024, and submittal of an application for a change of use of the site to allow for the sale of food late that year — as the previous permission for the site only allowed for its use as a DIY warehouse.

Now, ahead of a decision on this application, the supermarket giant has began to lodge plans for finer details of its proposed shop.

These include proposals for an illuminated double-sided totem sign, two illuminated building signs — one for Sainsbury’s and one for Argos — two illuminated ‘Welcome Wall’ signs, two non-illuminated car park totem signs, and ‘various smaller car park signs’ including markers for blue badge holder or parent and child spaces.

Sainsbury’s has also sought to install new plant equipment — refrigeration, air conditioning and associated works — in the service yard of the site, a new scissor lift, trolley bays, lighting, and reorganisation of the carpark to include parent and child, blue badge, and colleague parking on site.

It also proposes a new pedestrian crossing on Trent Lane to assist access to the store.

Newark Town Council has not raised an objection to the application, however members said in a statement that they would welcome five disabled parking spaces.
