Plans for school revamp revealed
Work is set to start on a new design and technology block for Toot Hill School, Bingham.
Artist’s impressions of the building, drawn up by Nottinghamshire County Council architects, have been released.
Work on the new building, part of a £1.9m investment, is due to start soon, according to the head of design and technology, Mr Richard Smith.
He said the new build was part of a modular development that would be constructed off site and transported to the school to be dropped into place.
“They use this system to build a lot of new hospitals and other big developments,” he said.
Although work has yet to start, Mr Smith expected the building to be finished and ready for use by November.
The school received £600,000 from the county council’s Children and Young Person’s Services Capital programme and contributed £500,000 of its own money towards the project.
As well as two new food technology rooms and three resistant material rooms, the block will include an ICT suite, graphics room and preparation room for use by the school technician who will cut materials ready for classroom use.
As part of the project, the school will also get new equipment including pillar drills and metal lathes.
“When it’s finished it will be a fantastic opportunity for the children. We are all looking forward to using it,” Mr Smith said.
“We really are in need of an upgrade.”
The existing block, built in the 1950s, has been rated as one of the worst school buildings in Nottinghamshire.
