Plans to build a care village on the former Ollerton Colliery – more recently the Sherwood Energy Village – off Burbank Avenue were submitted to Newark and Sherwood District Council

Plans have been unveiled for a new care village in Ollerton which could look after more than 100 elderly people.

It would be built on the former Ollerton Colliery – more recently the Sherwood Energy Village – off Burbank Avenue.

The designs from Millhouse Care Group include a building with 75 en-suite rooms and assisted living accommodation for another 30 people.

The plans are currently an outline planning application, which are used to establish whether a development would be acceptable in principle before finer details are confirmed.

A total of 15 parking spaces would be provided for staff and visitors.

Planning documents describe the proposed care home as a self-contained facility with residential rooms, communal spaces and all staff and care facilities to provide a contemporary, modern and safe care environment at a scale to deliver a viable enterprise.

The assisted living units would be self-contained, in five blocks of six rooms, with an on-site warden.

The site is just under half a hectare and sits within industrial and office buildings on the regenerated colliery site.

The application highlights the growing need for care facilities due to an ageing population and the problems the sector faced during the pandemic.

“In combination with significant costs increases and staff shortages, less-efficient, older and smaller care home operations have found it impossible to remain viable, at the same time as local authority and adult social care funding is extremely stressed,” it says.

The application is available to view on Newark and Sherwood District Council’s website, and will be determined at a later date.
