Plots inspire pupils

Carrots, onions, potatoes, beans and cabbages are among the items being grown by pupils in vegetable plots at their school.

Two raised flower beds were created at Lowe’s Wong Infants’ School, Southwell, by staff from Veolia ES Nottinghamshire, Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste management contractors.

Veolia installed the beds as part of their partnership with Nottinghamshire Cares, a business in the community campaign to get employees involved in their communities through volunteering.

The school’s head, Mrs Vanessa Platt, said: “The children love being out there planting vegetables and getting their hands dirty.

“We are hoping to get a little gardening club going so we can do it going all year round.

“It is really important for the children to have the chance to grow their own vegetables.

“Some of the little ones haven’t got any idea where vegetables come from so to actually see the process of growing things and get their hands dirty and see things growing is a great opportunity for them.”

Mrs Platt said the plants were donated by parents.

She said: “I was really surprised about the number of plants we got. I was expecting a few but we have been inundated.”

Mrs Platt said they planned to cook the vegetables.
