Nottinghamshire Police were overwhelmed by the response to an information session aimed at recruiting more Special constables for the Ollerton area.

A recruitment drive at Ollerton Town Hall on Saturday was attended by more than 50 people, mostly from the immediate area.

It follows a wave of public support for the police following the widespread rioting and public disorder that affected Nottingham and other major cities.

Superintendent John Kenton said: “We were delighted and a little overwhelmed by the number of people that attended the Specials recruitment day in Ollerton.

Mr Kenton said most of those who attended were local and of a wide age range.

The beat manager for Ollerton and Boughton, Pc Colin Oakley, said: “We have got to hope that the impetus continues.

“In some areas where they have quite a number of Special constables I have been told they have been a great help, so it is something I would welcome.”
