A petition has been launched to bring a popular fast-fashion retailer to Newark.

Jasmine Walton, of Newark, claimed independent businesses would benefit from the introduction of a Primark shop in Newark town centre.

“Each year more and more shops are closing down in Newark and Sherwood,” said Jasmine.

“The town centre could do with a Primark to bring the competition back — it is a shop that you can’t shop online with, the nearest ones are in Nottingham or Lincoln.

“Imagine if you weren’t able to travel that distance.

“What would you do if the only shops near you were designer clothes that cost £50 for a single t-shirt?

“Where would you get that money from?

“The Christmas shopping period is coming up, and people are still suffering from the impact of covid, and many people are struggling from debt or a lack of money.

“Having a Primark would improve footfall, increase competition, which could bring back the town to the way it used to be.

“Who wouldn’t want to help your home town?

“Remember every year more and more shops are closing down in Newark and Sherwood.”

Jasmine said she was happy with the support she had received so far and said it had been popular with young people.

“It could really take off but if it doesn’t at least it has started the conversation about improving the town centre because the town is dying,” said Jasmine.

At the time of print, the petition had 364 signatures.
