POLL: Should Network Rail face fines for every barrier failure at Newark Castle Station?

There was gridlock on roads in Newark and heading into town when the barriers at Castle Station level crossing were stuck in the down position on Monday.

The barriers were down for more than an hour before the fault was fixed, leaving cars queuing.

A bystander said police arrived to direct traffic. The traffic was eventually cleared by late afternoon.

Many readers took to the Advertiser Facebook page to express their anger at the situation, which was described as laughable.

Martyn Cox said the functionality of the barrier’s need looking into.

He said: “It’s caused the entire town to become gridlocked yet again. Businesses are trying to reopen after the worst 12 months imaginable and then traffic comes to a complete standstill.”

Another reader, Vicki Leek, called for the barriers to be physically controlled again as a solution to the increasing number of issues.
