Pool time rethink

I know you cannot please all of the people all the time but I cannot be the only parent of a young child disappointed with the regular swimming timetable at the new Newark leisure centre.

The school summer holidays timetable has meant I have been able to go to early-morning parent and toddler sessions on a Monday or Thursday.

But when the timetable reverts back to normal in September, it will be less convenient to attend.

That is because ordinarily the weekday parent and toddler sessions are either over lunchtimes or in the afternoon, from, for example, 3pm.

For those with other children who need collecting from school, this time of afternoon is unmanageable, and also many toddlers still like a nap after lunch.

Lunchtime swimming sessions would also be a bad idea, particularly for those who like a regular (or fairly regular) mealtime routine.

It would be interesting to see how many parents take preschoolers to these sessions in term-time.

Certainly, the holiday parent and toddler morning sessions (from 9am or 9.15am) have been popular.

I am sure they will be missed. I hope the powers-that-be have a rethink and provide some toddler swimming as standard from 9am.

On a positive note, the new teaching pool is an excellent facility, and the changing rooms are certainly an improvement on those at the old Grove Leisure Centre.

The addition of a soft play area (albeit small) is a bonus for those with young children using the new centre, although the inclusion of a café wouldhave made it even better.
