Newark Advertiser reader letters: Poor festive showing in town

I was in Newark the Sunday before Christmas and what a disappointment it was — absolutely no festive atmosphere at all.

Not even the tree in the Market Place was lit up and none of the light displays were on.

I went into town thinking there may have been some sort of festive market, particularly as many of the events earlier in the month had been cancelled because of the weather, but no.

There were quite a few people in town that day, I wonder how many went in with the same expectation?

It may have been quiet and miserable outside, but at least we were given a really warm welcome in all the shops we went in as we finished off our Christmas shopping. — A. Smith, Newark.
