A service that helps unemployed people in the Ollerton area find work can continue for another two years after a £100,000 grant was secured.

Ollerton and District Economic Forum’s employment support service received the money from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

The support service was set up two years ago at the forum’s Forest Road office, using a previous grant from the coalfields trust.

Ollerton’s job centre, the One Office, had closed the previous year, leaving no employment service in the area.

The forum will use the latest money to pay for two members of staff and new computer equipment.

The charity’s development manager, Mr David Heathcote, said 693 people had used the support service since it began, an average of 25 a week.

He said dozens of people had found work directly as a result of using the support service and many more had been helped indirectly.

The economic forum targets people from the most deprived areas of the community, particularly younger people aged 18-25.

“They don’t even remember when the pit was open in Ollerton,” Mr Heathcote said.

“When the Coalfields Regeneration Trust first started it was for redundant miners.

“The people we are now helping are the next generation.”

Mr Heathcote said the service was not just for people who were unemployed, but also for those looking to improve their careers.

People can use a database provided by the service to find suitable jobs throughout the UK and can also get help in creating a CV and completing application forms.

The forum also offers basic skills training in literacy, numeracy and computers.

As well as paid employment, the service can help people find voluntary work.

Mr Heathcote said in the next two years they were hoping to extend the service to communities outside of Ollerton.
