Postal campaign for better parking
A LETTER will be posted to all shops and offices in Southwell telling them about free carparks in an effort to clear Burgage and Burgage Lane of parked vehicles.
Southwell Town Council’s planning committee believe people are parking on the streets, creating problems for those living nearby, because they do not know about free all-day parking.
The War Memorial carpark on Bishop’s Drive and the carpark at the back of Southwell Leisure Centre, off Park Lane, are both town council-owned and offer free parking.
Councillors believe the majority of those who park on Burgage and Burgage Lane are people who work in the town.
Mr Peter Pay said: “We have had complaints about the number of cars parked on the Burgage and Burgage Lane.
“We have got to take some steps towards resolving the issue.
“If we don’t try and do something, there will be pressure to get double yellow lines.”
Mr Paul Handley suggested sending a letter to shops and businesses in Southwell so they could pass on the message to their employees.
Members considered putting leaflets about the free carparks under windscreen wipers.
Mrs Beryl Rimmer said: “It is very optimistic to think that people will take notice of any leaflets that are used.
“A lot of people will take exception to it and it might cause a problem with litter.”
Mr Brendan Haigh said: “I think a lot of people in the town will become offended by it.
“People have become used to parking on their own doorsteps and at some point that culture will have to change.”
