Prison warning

A Newark man who carried out a racially aggravated attack outside a Lincoln kebab shop has been warned by a judge he could be facing prison.

Christopher Self (25) of Earp Avenue appeared before Lincoln Crown Court where he admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm to Mr Dion Hinds on September 7 after a confrontation between the two men in the Charcoal Grill takeaway on Clasketgate.

He denied making racial comments towards Mr Hinds or deliberately stamping on him but a judge decided he was satisfied that Self carried out the allegations after listening to both men during a two day hearing.

He was bailed so reports could be prepared but was warned he could be sent to prison when he is sentenced next month.

The court was told that Mr Hinds suffered a broken ankle and was repeatedly punched and then stamped on by Self after a dispute about queue-jumping.

Mr Hinds admitted he had been drinking but said he was clear about a racial remark made to him by Self.

Self, who was also intoxicated, admitted punching Mr Hinds to the head and body but claimed he was acting in self defence. He could offer no explanation for the injury to Mr Hinds.

Mr Hinds said he could remember the sole of Self’s shoe coming down on him with force. Medical evidence proved the ankle could have been broken either by accident or a stamp.

Recorder Simon Lofthouse QC said he was satisfied the words used by Self were racially aggravated but said they were not the primary reason for the attack. He said that Self had deliberately stamped on Mr Hinds and had not acted in self defence.
