Reader's letter: Protesting over poor treatment
Working in environmental campaigning for many years, I’m truly shocked by how campaigners are treated.
Firstly, they are ignored by their elected leaders and secondly, they are smeared.
It happens all too often, including here in Newark.
Campaigners are often portrayed as a threat and aggressive and intimidating to the public to lose support. But their real threat is exposure to the corporations and councils who are not working in the wider interest of humanity and their local communities.
Protesters are considered a threat because they challenge the damaging ‘business as usual’.
Protesters are people too — grandparents, teachers, nurses, siblings and sons and daughters.
From tots to senior citizens, they’re passionate-hearted people, who give up their time, energy and skills to make positive change — often in uncomfortable and emotional circumstances.
Can we stop deflecting poor and corrupt leadership on to regular people who are fed up with being failed by their governments? — E. OLDHAM, via email.
