A new licence for a Southwell pub was granted by Newark and Sherwood District Council yesterday despite concerns from residents.

Around 20 residents attended the council’s licensing committee meeting on Tuesday to object to the proposed premises licence for The Final Whistle, formerly the Newcastle Arms.

The pub is owned by Everards.

Nottinghamshire Police and the district council’s environmental health services had objections, but withdrew them after additional conditions were agreed.

The conditions included taking steps to make sure customers waiting to enter or leave did not cause annoyance or nuisance to people in the area, that regulated entertainment should not annoy neighbours, and doors and windows should be kept closed when recorded music was played indoors.

Other conditions were that the drinking of alcohol outside should stop at 11pm, there should be no entry or re-entry to the pub after 11.30pm except for people who had gone outside to smoke, and that the garden area should close at 11pm.

Recorded music can be played only inside the pub and the opening hours were changed from 8am to 1am to 8am to 12.30am.

Residents were concerned that music and people drinking and smoking in the garden would create a lot of noise.
