School children joined forces with a wellbeing and positivity business to help bring a free community fun day to life, writes Marta Tavares and Amelie Wood-Williams .
Year Five pupils at Christ Church School, Middlebeck, have been working with Claire Clements, founder of Positive Pants and co-founder of the Positively Empowered Kids CIC, ahead of the Newark Community Funday.
The family-focused day, run by both of Claire’s businesses, is set to take place on Saturday July 12 from 11am until 3pm, at Christ Church School.
The children have been putting their heads together to come up with ideas for the festival and drawing posters for their own stalls.
They will be running a range of stalls, such as hair braiding, games, sweet stalls, hook a duck, raffles and tombolas, and the money raised from that will be invested to improve the school’s play area.
Claire said: “I think as grown-ups, quite often we predict what we think the children want, and there are so many events that are run with us just assuming what they want.
“When you actually talk to them, they come up with some brilliant ideas that we as grown-ups might not think of.
“The power of it is on the day, when they actually stop and look at all these people that are here, and they’ll know that they've contributed to it.
“It is really powerful, I am really proud of them all.”
The event is dedicated to children and adults in the community with the aim of supporting health and wellbeing.
On the day, there will be entertainment for all ages, such as circus skills, performances from MF Dance, yoga sessions, a hovercraft, diggers, and even their own Superhero who will be getting the children up singing and dancing.
Newark and Sherwood District Council will be hosting a stall to teach families about recycling, and Newark Tennis Club, Gifts from Fairies, Brookes Blooms, and Active4Today will also be present on the day.
Pupil Summer Clarkson, 10, said: “I am excited to be there and bring smiles to the community’s faces.”
Oscar Caughtry, 10, said: “The funday is going to be able to raise money for the school, to have more things.”
The school’s teacher, Karen Wells, who alongside Claire is helping to bring the project to life, said that she is “very proud” of the pupils.
The community fun day is supported by Middlebeck Newark, Breheny Civil Engineering, and Taylor Aggregates.
Anyone who can contribute to the community fun day by donating raffle prizes for the children’s stalls can contact claire@positivepants.co.uk or drop it at the school directly.
