A school has raised hundreds of pounds to help children in Africa receive an education.

Pupils from Lowe’s Wong Junior School, Southwell, handed over a cheque for £640 to Patricia Rouamba from the Dayagnewende School, Burkino Faso.

She was at the school on Wednesday as part of a month-long visit to the UK.

The money will go to the Faso Fund that supports education projects in the country.

Mrs Roamba said: “We will use the money to finish the primary school building and buy benches.

“We will also use it to fund a feeding project for school children because many of them have very little to eat.

“I want to say thank you to the children for what they have done.”

The children raised the money by holding various fundraising events, including a cake sale and name the teddy bear competition.

They also showed Mrs Rouamba clocks that they had made to illustrate their daily routines and compared them to those of the Dayagnewende pupils.

Pupil James Murray, 11, said: “I liked working with my friends to raise the money.”

Lowe’s Wong has had a link to the Dayagnewende school for five years after the head, Mrs Sheila Street, made a contact there.

The school holds an annual Africa week.

Mrs Street said: “It has been a really good learning curve for the children, which has crossed culture and religion.

“Many of them have commented on how fortunate they are to have all the things they do.”
