Twelve pupils at the Grove School, Balderton, have won an annual competition for the best newsletter for the second consecutive year.

Pupils in all five houses at the school, Warwick, Kenilworth, Ludlow, Stirling and Richmond, competed to create a newsletter as part of a team led by one editor. Rules stated that one article had to be about the school, one about sport and another about Balderton and the community.

The winner was the Stirling Standard newsletter, with the tag line Raising The Standard, produced by the team in Stirling house, who worked on it every day for three weeks.

Joe Pointing (15) was appointed editor. He used a computer to produce the newsletter and was also responsible for setting deadlines and proof-reading.

Alisha Spindley (13) and Clarissa Norwak (13) both interviewed Alice Thomas (15) who was also on the team, for their article on her success gaining 8th place in the Olympics trials for swimming.

Alisha said: “It was quite fun actually because you get to talk to other people you don’t normally talk to. You get to know them better.”

Jacob Pointing (13) was one of the team that wrote about Balderton and its lack of facilities.

He said: “We thought we would write about why it is bad and what needs to be better.”

Jacob said that he and Joe Wilson (14) and Kyle Dowling (14) interviewed people before writing their article.

Lauren Cowling (16) who said she liked writing poetry, interviewed a teacher at the Grove about the merger with Newark High School next academic year.

She said: “It was quite informal. He had done a lot of interviews before.

“When you interview somebody with confidence you can ask one question and get lots of answers back, so it’s quite difficult to control.”

Rebecca Cobb (16) and Kerin Carter (15) interviewed Year Seven pupils at Newark High School to find out what they thought of moving to the Grove. They said it was a quite difficult task.

The competition was judged by The Advertiser’s joint managing director, Miss Joanna Parlby.
