No one can fail to have been moved by this week’s shocking events in Wright Street, Newark. Our town found itself in the national media spotlight in the aftermath of a huge explosion in which two people tragically died.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to their family and friends.

Within seconds of the blast passers-by and neighbours, with little or no thought for their own safety, were helping to rescue those left trapped in their homes.

They are reluctant heroes and say they simply acted on instinct. Their bravery, however, surely deserves commendation.

The emergency services should also be praised for their prompt and continuing professionalism in what have been harrowing and dangerous circumstances.

What we are seeing now is Newark’s strong sense of community coming to the fore as individuals, organisations and businesses rally round those most affected.

Clothes, toys and everyday essentials are being donated and made available to those in need.

Within hours the Advertiser was being contacted by a steady stream of people wanting to do all they could to help.

Charles Street Methodist Church has become central to the outpouring of community support.

The church and others will have a further role to play in the days and weeks ahead.

The bravery and generosity of Newark people during and after this terrible incident is one small bright spot in what has been a dark week for the town.
