Newark and Sherwood United are looking at potential sites to create a community stadium including Riverside Park, the Old Cattlemarket, the Lilly and Stone School and the old Flowserve site

A range of sites are being considered for a community sports stadium in Newark, including a park and a former school.

Newark and Sherwood United wants to create a sustainable community stadium – made using shipping containers – in the heart of Newark.

It could be used for men's and women’s football, cup finals, rugby, live music, cup finals, and even boxing.

The club has applied for financing from the Newark Town Fund second funding pot.

But the project is still in its early stages of feasibility work. The club is currently looking at a wide number of potential sites to assess the issues and benefits of each of them.

A few of the potential sites are Riverside Park, the Cattlemarket site, Lilley and Stone School and former Flowserve land.

“One of the aims of the Towns Fund is to drive more economic activity to the centre of Newark and locating a small community stadium in the heart of the town will bring more people into the town and improve the trade for local businesses,” said club chairman Steff Wright.

The idea behind using shipping containers or modular units is to create a pop-up stadium, which can be clad to blend into the environment.

Steff added: “Containers have been successfully used for leisure developments such as the Stack development in Newcastle and the one recently opened in Lincoln.

“Newark is one of a number of towns to receive Towns Funding and the wider towns fund board is bringing together a diverse group of people who are all passionate about improving the vitality of the town.”

The group was expected to have a decision on the allocation by August 1, however, it was delayed for a couple of months due to the General Election.
