Rare car makes a special appearance at Beaumond House Community Hospice for its open day
A rare car made a special visit to Beaumond House Community Hospice, Newark, on Saturday for the hospice’s open day.
The 1959 Heinkel bubble car belongs to Julian Haycraft, whose wife, Pat, attends the hospice for day therapy.
He took it along to the hospice’s open day and coffee morning, as one of the attractions for visitors.
Julian, a classic car enthusiast, is a regular at classic car shows and said that his bubble car always drew plenty of attention wherever it went.
“It always attracts lots of people who love having their picture taken with it,” he said.
He has owned the car for 14 years and decided to buy it from a friend after seeing how much it meant to Pat.
“I had wanted to buy a steam engine but Pat fell in love with the car,” he said.
The three-wheeled car has a 200cc engine and can do a top speed of 45 to 50mph.
It has room for a driver and a passenger at the front and two more at the back.
The cars were originally made in Germany and then Southern Ireland before production moved to the UK, where the vehicle was called the Trojan.
The hospice coffee morning gave visitors a chance to look round Beaumond House, see the facilities, meet staff, volunteers and users, and find out more about the work that it does.
The hospice’s mascot, Sunshine Bear, was also there, and even managed to squeeze into the bubble car.
There is still time to sign up for Fright the Night event at Newark Showground a week on Wednesday, to raise money for the hospice.
The 5km run follows a course of spooky glow stations. It starts with registration and a Halloween party from 4pm, with the run starting at 7pm.
