Farndon Horticultural Society marked its 90th annual show with a record-breaking 640 entries on Saturday.

About 200 people attended the event, at the memorial hall on Marsh Lane. The most successful competitor was the society’s vice-chairman, Mr Louis Ashurst, of Brockton Avenue, Farndon, who gained 174 points.

As well as winning eight trophies and the chairman’s special prize for the best pepper plant, Mr Ashurst’s efforts were rewarded with a Royal Horticultural Society Banksian bronze medal.

The medal was instituted in 1820 in memory of Sir Joseph Banks, one of the founders of the Royal Horticultural Society.

The secretary of Farndon Horticultural Society, Mr Alan Solomon, said there was a high standard of floral art, with 25 original and colourful displays.

A total of 81 pictures were entered in the photographic classes, which, for the first time, included two separate junior classes.

The photographs were judged by Mr Paul King, of Newark Photographic Society.

Mr Solomon won the trophy for most points overall in the photographic classes.

There were 130 entries in the young people’s section, which included six-and-under, 12-and-under and 12-16 years.

The section winners were Joshua Derry (5) with 21 points, Rosie Fryer (10) with 16 points and Amy-Jade Harker (12) with 25 points.

The show included cream teas and refreshments and ended with a sale of produce and a raffle.

Mr Solomon said: “All the new officers and committee and everyone connected with the society have worked so hard to ensure a massive entry and a very successful show.”
