Nottinghamshire developer Barratt Homes plants remembrance tree for First World War hero in Bingham

A tree has been planted in remembrance of a First World War hero.

The tree was planted in Bingham in remembrance of Second Lieutenant Richard Webster Jardine, as his mother lived in the village at the time of his death.

The planting ceremony took place on Armistice Day, following a service of dedication from the Bingham Royal British Legion where the Town Mayor and Bingham Town Council were also present.

Barratt Homes dedicated the tree — which was planted at its Romans’ Quarter development in Bingham — to the soldier who sacrificed his life at war.

Mark Cotes, managing director at Barratt Homes North Midlands, said: “It’s incredibly important to remember our fallen heroes, and that’s why we wanted to do something long-lasting for the community to remember Richard for his brave actions.

“We hope that the planting of this memorial tree provides a place for the Bingham community to pay their respects to a local war hero.”

In 2018 event the development also acted as a place of remembrance as Barratt Homes joined forces with the Royal British Legion, Bingham Heritage Trails Association, Rushcliffe Borough Council, Bingham Town Council and the Mercian Regiment of the British Army to hold a community service of remembrance to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.
