Residents in Gainsborough upset after East Anglia Dairy milk company closes Newark depot without warning
Residents have been left without their milk deliveries as the Newark depot of a dairy closed without any warning.
Paul Hawkins had been getting milk delivered to his doorstep from East Anglia Dairy for several years, which was operating from a depot on Marles Close.
The milk was delivered to the village every Tuesday and Friday, however, residents were alarmed when they didn’t receive the milk on Tuesday, September 10.
“I accept it might not be financially viable to continue delivering around here, but I think it was inconsiderate and a bit naughty of them to leave vulnerable people without milk or any warning,” said Mr Hawkins, of Scotter.
“I had to get milk for my 90-year-old neighbour from the shop as she is unable to get to the shop and was used to getting the milk every week.”
East Anglia Dairy has been approached for comment, but have failed to respond.
Residents received a letter the following Saturday (September 14), missing both Tuesday and Friday milk deliveries.
The letter read: “It is with great regret that we must announce we can no longer continue to make doorstep deliveries in your area.
“As I am sure you can appreciate, the doorstep delivery service has been in decline for some time and staff recruitment has become an impossible undertaking.”
People were provided with the company bank details and asked to make their final payments.
After closing their Newark depot, the company moved to a new location with with address being F.A.O East Anglia Dairy, Milk & More, Inner Street, Grantham.
Mr Hawkins added: “They haven’t handled this situation very well.
“From now on, we will have to do like most people and just get stuff from the store, which will be plastic rather than glass.
“I think this is a step towards the end of doorstep delivery.”
