Radical plans to transform estate

Radical plans to transform a Newark housing estate could see 130 homes demolished.

The scheme to regenerate the Yorke Drive estate and Lincoln Road playing fields will also see about 370 new homes built.

An exhibition outlining the plans was staged at The Bridge Community Centre on Friday – and it was the first many residents knew about the scale of the planned demolition.

Consultations have been taking place with residents throughout the year to get their views on how the estate should be improved.

Three options were put forward at an exhibition in July and feedback showed Option 3 was preferred by two thirds of residents who attended.

It included a new access route through the estate and up to 200 homes on the playing field, with no specific demolition figures given.

Newark and Sherwood District Council’s business manager for strategic housing, Rob Main, told the Advertiser in July: “There may be properties that need to be demolished depending on what goes forward. We will make an offer to re-home where necessary should there be properties affected.”

Many residents were shocked at Friday’s exhibition to see that 130 homes have been earmarked for demolition.

A drop-in session to let residents see the proposals again and to ask questions and give feedback will be held at Beaumond Walk Community Centre on the estate tomorrow from 10am to 1pm.
